Oh, Hi, Lovely,
Did you hear? Everyone’s favorite decoupage medium is turning 50!
This means it is 3 years younger than me. Ahem.
I was compensated for this post and provided materials, which has me tickled three shades of orange and pink. Tee hee. I’ve partnered with AC Moore Stores AND Plaid Crafts to bring you a fabulous faux encaustic wax technique, a retrofabulous pair of Vintage Collage Trays, AND a HUGE (US ONLY) giveaway of Mod Podge-y goodness.
Can I get a what, what?
What? What? I’m 53, my hearing is going.
Ba dum chah.
I have been Mod Podgeing for years. The Podge that is Mod, Mod Podge, is one of my favorite mediums for making purses, jewelry, and home decor items. It’s pronounced Mod Podge not Modge Podge, FYI. Mod Podge is short for Modern Decoupage. Mod Podge is a glue, sealer and finish. It was developed by Jan Wetstone, in her garage in 1967, she even Mod Podged a VW Bug! In my world, Mod Podge can be a noun, verb, and an adjective, in case you didn’t know. There are all sorts of fabulous crafty products in the Mod Podge brand, not just decoupage medium.
Thank you for joining Fun facts, with Madge. But I digress, we have crafts to craft!
Materials (You can find everything you need to make this project, except for the vintage images, at AC Moore Stores!)
ModPodge Chalk Ultra Matte Finish
ModPodge Matte Acrylic Sealer (Optional)
2 laser cut wood trays
Vintage Glamour Images (We got ours from vintage magazines, which you can find at antique shops or online)
FolkArt Metallic Paint Peridot and Silver Sterling
FolkArt Home Decor Chalk Paint White and
FolkArt Chalk Paint Brush
FolkArt Wide Brush
FolkArt Detail Brushes
ModPodge Flat Brushes
ModPodge Brayer and Scraper
Medium Grit Sandpaper
(Design note: This technique creates a hazy, waxy, layered look over the images, if you want a more crisp, smooth, clear look, use gloss finish and no heat tool.)
Measure inside box with measuring tape.
Cut largest paper layer to fit using a paper cutter. Cut smaller layers, graduating in size.
Hand cut out other elements. We used the original vintage images, however you can scan, size, and print them if you prefer.
Lightly sand box. Add painter’s tape to protect edges of filigree.
Paint two coats of Silver Sterling, allowing them to dry in between coats. (Paint grey on the inside filigree, but not the outside.) Let this dry.
Use a dry brush. Tap edge of bristles into White chalk paint. Dab off excess. Brush over interior and exterior of box.
Use a smaller flat brush to paint two coats of the Peridot on the filigree on the outside of the box. Let this dry.
Paint a medium coat of Mod Podge on bottom of box. Press the first collage layer into box, use a brayer and a scraper to work out any bubbles. (Place a piece of parchment paper over the surface to protect it.) Let this sit for 15-20 minutes, then brush a layer of ModPodge over surface. Let this dry. Repeat this process, building up your layers. Let this all dry overnight. Don’t freak out if you have a few bubbles, you can pop them with a safety pin and gently press them out. We will add texture later to hide any flaws.
Lightly load the tip of a small flat brush with white paint. Tap on box edge to make splatters. Repeat with grey paint.
Brush ModPodge over parts of the collage, then use a heat tool over the medium until it starts to bubble. Repeat this as desired. This will give you the look of encaustic wax and add lots of yummy texture. Let this dry overnight.
Optional: Depending on how you plan to use this, you may want to seal it with a matte acrylic sealer, Mod Podge makes one! This will protect the surface from scratches, etc.
Perfect for your vanity or holding your jewelry!
Tres chic, n’est pas?
