Today we’re talking about Luv Michael Granola. I think you’re going to like this company. Part of the mission here at Cocktails Cupcakes Crafts is to shine a light on makers, people who are making things with the sweat of their brow and the work of their hands. People who are making it work. The world is changing, the way people make a living is changing. Not everyone fits the mold. It takes creativity and ingenuity to break the mold and make a new one. We don’t have to buy into the mass consumer mentality, we can make things with our hands that have impact, power, and soulfulness. That’s what they’re doing at Luv Michael Granola. That’s why I’m excited to share their story with you. Before we get started, I want to disclose that they sent me a bag of their delicious granola to enjoy. The FTC needs me to tell you that, but I can assure you that I am not writing this post because I got a bag of granola. Inside of that bag is something much bigger and far more important than a breakfast cereal. Inside of that bag is a big idea that’s changing lives.
There are over 3.5 million people on the autism spectrum in America. 90% of them are unemployed. Wrap your mind around that for a moment. Michael Kessaris (that’s him in the photo above) was an avid cook who was rejected from culinary school because he lacked a high school diploma. Luv Michael was started by his parents, Lisa Liberatore, MD and Dimitri Kessaris, MD. They created the food based business so that their son and others with Autism would not be a burden on society or limited in their potential to lead happy and productive lives. For Michael and his team, producing the highest quality gluten-free and natural products was a logical tie-in; healthy dietary alternatives have been found to be beneficial to many with Autistic symptoms. Providing training and income for others on the Autistic spectrum became their mission.
Luv Michael granola is hand crafted in small batches by team members called granologists. They’re trained, paid a living wage, and given a meaningful culinary vocation. All of the products are created by the team members from start to finish. The company has plans to expand the line beyond granola into other gluten free organic baked goods. One of the core goals is to address the growing awareness in both food allergies and other toxic agents found in many of our food items. The Liberatore and Kessaris families are working with autism specialists to develop an entire curriculum based upon the New York State food handler’s license and are dedicated to not only teach cooking and food safety but also all aspects of a small business including sales, marketing and customer service and distribution.
Pretty cool, huh? Making something that’s making a difference for the makers, making the world a better place, making food that is good for the mind, body, and soul. That’s something we can get behind here at Cocktails Cupcakes Crafts. Check out Luv Michael Granola and tell ’em Madge sent ya. Oh and, it’s seriously tasty granola to boot, and I’m pretty particular about my granola. Crisp, flavor packed, not too sweet, I’m a fan. Wake up and make a difference, I like it.
