It’s time to deck the halls with black and orange! Halloween is right around the corner and we’ve partnered with AC Moore Arts and Crafts and Plaid Crafts to bring you this DIY Haunted Witch House Marquee Sign you can make in a few simple steps. The house is fashioned from a Christmas tree blank that is made for fitting with string lights. It took a little creativity to visualize it as a witch’s house, but I’m pleased as punch with how it turned out. It’s the perfect mix of whimsical and spooky. You can find everything you need to make this project at AC Moore stores.
You will need:
29.5″ wooden tree form
36 strand white string lights
Apple Barrel Paints in Black, Pumpkin Orange, White, Grey
Mod Podge Detail Brushes
FolkArt 1/4″ Flat Brush
Halloween picks (orange/black/white pom pom tree, ghost/pumpkin/pom pom pick)
2″ wooden black cat
Hot glue sticks
Step one: Trace 1″ circles for eyes using bottom of a small paint container. Draw eyelids, pupils, and irises as shown. (Plan the placement of eyeballs and windows before you start.)
Step two: Windows are 2″ tall and 1/5″ wide. Use a pencil and ruler to measure and mark. Add spiderwebs as shown. You will be using a marker to draw those on after the paint dries.
Step three: Door is 3″ wide and 3″ tall. Use ruler and pencil to measure and mark. Add teeth, handle, and hinges as shown.
Step four: Start with black background paint, being careful to work around eyeballs, windows, and door.
Step five: Paint eyeballs as shown. Grey for eyelids, orange irises, black pupils, white dots in pupils. I went back after these dried and added black eyeliner.
Step six: Paint windows white, sills are grey. Add black, white, and orange accents as shown using detail brushes.
Step seven: Continue adding details to the various elements.
Step eight: Once the paint has dried, use a fine tip marker to create the spider webs in the windows. You can redraw these with a pencil if you can’t see your original lines, then add marker.
Step thirteen: Paint door handle, hinges, teeth and frame.
Step fourteen: Paint base grey. Paint the cat black.
Step fifteen: Measure and mark half inch segments using a ruler and pencil. Paint every other segment orange. Add a thin stripe of white and a thinner stripe of black on the right side of each orange stripe as shown.
Step sixteen: Clip the pumpkin and ghost from the pick using wire cutters or wire friendly scissors.
Step seventeen: Mark a spot on the left front with a pencil and use a drill with 1/8″ bit to drill a hole for your tree.
Step eighteen: Use hot glue to attach tree, pumpkin, ghost, and cat to base as shown.
Step nineteen: Add lights and let the party start!
