(We were provided some of the tools and materials used to make this project by our partner Plaid Crafts, however we were not compensated for this post. If we don’t love it, we don’t; share it, period.)
I bought a handcrafted vintage style sign over Christmas which I absolutely love. It isn’t quite right for the rest of the year, so I decided to make a more colorful version with a similar design aesthetic. I am so happy with how this turned out, I love the colors and the dimension. It fits right into our ‘Gnome Sweet Gnome’ decor.
You’ll need a wooden board, chalk paints, a small grapevine wreath, and some faux flowers to make one of your own.
What you need
Materials (Waverly paints and tools are available at WalMart stores. The links below are affiliate links, if you click on a link and make a purchase, we get a small percentage of the sale. That’s how we keep our craft closet stocked!)
1″x5.5″x3′ Wooden Board (We bought a 6′ board from the lumber section at the hardware store and cut it in half and trimmed the edges with a circular saw. If you don’t want to DIY this part, you can ask them to cut your board for you at the hardware store.)
Faux Flowers (You can find these at WalMart or any craft store)
8″ Letter Stencils
Waverly Chalk Paints (Agave, Maize, Pool, Pumpkin, White)
Waverly Acrylic Paint Bubblegum Pink
Waverly Chalk Paint Brush
Waverly Stencil Brushes
FolkArt Detail Painters
Medium Grit Sandpaper
Staple Gun Staples
Hot Glue Stick
16 Gauge Annealed Wire
Cut board, sand edges and surface to smooth.
Paint one layer of Maize chalk paint. Let this dry.
Paint one layer of Pumpkin chalk paint paint. Let this dry.
Paint one layer of Pool chalk paint paint. Let this dry.
Paint one layer of White chalk paint. Let this dry.
Sand sides and surface. Vary your pressure to expose different levels of paint/wood.
Measure placement of letters and wreath. Tape letters down with stencil tape.
Use stencil brush to stencil letter in Agave chalk paint. Let this dry.
Use paint dabbers to add colorful dots of Bubblegum, Pumpkin, Maize, and Pool. Just dip dabber into paint, tap on a scrap sheet of paper, then press on letter. When this dries, sand just a little to distress.
Slide flower stems into wreath, layering them as shown.
Use hot glue gun to attach wreath to front of sign.
Cut an 8″ piece of annealed wire using memory wire shears.
Bend wire from center, rounding it around a dowel. I used the top of a small bottle. You want to make a u-shape. Make 90 degree angle at tips of wire using chain nose pliers. Hammer the bent tips into the board.
Use staple gun to staple wire flush to back of board.
Bring spring inside without the allergies!
Love the dimension of this little wreath. You could make a full size wreath like this for your front door!
